Web.Comp 2024

Starts October 21

“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.”
—Steve Jobs

What is Web.Comp?

Web.Comp is a web design competition for school students. We’ll teach you how to build a website as we go along, rather than expecting you to be an expert already.

Two components:

Learn is a 4-week series of challenges where students learn as they go along. Each week, we'll release interactive notes with the information students will need to complete the week's web design challenges. Students earn points for completing problems and claim a place on the leaderboard - participants will receive certificates for their results in this competition. The Learn competition starts October 21st.

Tournament is a week long competition where students can design their own web pages and submit their creations to compete against other students' designs. They can also vote for their favourites. The Tournament begins on November 18.

Why learn web design?

Every time you use the web, you're seeing HTML and CSS.
We use websites every day. Creating a functional and well-designed website is one of the most useful technical skills you can learn.

Web.Comp teaches you HTML and CSS, the powerful building blocks needed to build a website from scratch. Learning to write HTML and CSS by hand gives you full control over the look and interactivity of your site, so you can implement your web designs exactly as you imagined them!

Which stream should I participate in?

Web.Comp (Beginners)

Students learn the basics of HTML, CSS, and how the internet works. We'll also teach them how to apply design principles to transform design briefs into digital creations. Recommended for students with little or no HTML/CSS experience.

Web.Comp (Intermediate)

Want to go beyond the skills you learned in Beginners? Students will extend their web design knowledge and cover more advanced topics. We assume students have completed either the Beginners stream, or our Intro to HTML course.

Web.Comp Tournament

The tournament is open to all students. However, students will need some prior HTML/CSS knowledge to compete. We recommend students have previously completed either stream of Web.Comp or our Intro to HTML course.

Students will also receive…

Certificate of achievement

Grok competitions are challenging, and we want to recognise students’ achievements! All students who participate will receive a printable certificate.

Rank on the leaderboard

Students go head to head with other students from around the world! They earn points for each problem they solve, claim their rank on the leaderboard, to win glory for themselves and their school!

Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand Students:

Web.Comp is free to all Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand students.

International Students:

You will need Grok School Access to participate so contact us to arrange it for your school today! This also applies to all of the other courses and competitions we run.

Student designs from previous Tournaments

Check out student designs submitted to past Web.Comp Design Tournaments: The Plant Warehouse (a fictional plant sale) and gBay (a fictional online marketplace). Students were given the HTML for these websites which they styled using the web design skills they'd learned in the previous four weeks!

The Plant Warehouse

The most effective way for students to learn coding.
