Grok Code Quest is a friendly five-week competition where thousands of school students come together to learn to code. Teachers can sign up their students, and students competing individually at home are also welcome!
Grok Code Quest 2018 will run for 5 weeks, from Monday 29th October until Sunday 2nd December. Programming challenges are released at the beginning of each week, along with interactive notes that teach you everything you need to complete them.
Grok Code Quest will teach students how to program as we go along, rather than expecting them to be an expert already. With four streams to choose from and problems ranging from simple to challenging, there's something for coders of all experience levels.
Get your students started with our BBC micro:bit Crash Course. First two modules are available for free.
If you want to keep learning, Grok Code Quest includes a micro:bit stream which will continue teaching students to program the BBC micro:bit and introduce a whole new world of embedded computing! The micro:bit is a handheld, fully programmable computer with an array of lights and sensors. The micro:bit stream fully simulates the micro:bit in the browser so students can learn MicroPython online.
MicroPython is a lean and fast implementation of the Python 3 programming language for microcontrollers, and can be used to create awesome projects with the micro:bit!
Note: Code Quest 2018 reuses the content and questions from the NCSS Challenge 2018 and the micro:bit Crash course. NCSS Challenge students can use Code Quest to try the next level of difficulty.
“It teaches you as you go so you are able to test yourself, but you aren't expected to already know everything. I love how the problems are so creative, and entertaining to read. The tutors are also really friendly and respond quickly to queries.”
“Working on a challenge for hours, racking your brain and thinking about it for hours more, and then the feeling of success and satisfaction when you run it and it's correct! I love the little adrenaline rush you get when all the green ticks pop up!”
“Students who have normally been less than engaged in Tech are suddenly immersed in it, not only managing to work through the problems and frustrations but also helping each other. The collegiality and collaborative environment is fabulous.”
Sujatha, Technology Teacher
“Not only did the challenges allow [students] to develop new skills, it also improved their self confidence as they were able to see the improvements they made as they worked through the problems. Our school based data shows improved computational thinking with improved results in external competitions.”
Linda, Technology Teacher
